Rating: This claim is FALSE. The Black Lives Matter (BLM) national platform is focused on eradicating racism against Black-Americans. Unarmed Black people are more likely to be killed by police than white people. BLM wants to reform and reimagine policing so that needless violence and death can be avoided, and more money can be invested into Black communities.
Claim: Rudy Giuliani, President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, has claimed that Black Lives Matter “is a terrorist organization.” Similar claims are also present on Facebook.
Rating: This claim as FALSE. Black Lives Matter is primarily a movement that seeks to achieve racial equality for Black Americans through legal means such as peaceful protest, education, and voter awareness. It does not support looting or violence, and the incidences of both have been very small relative to the number of protests.
There are many examples of success stories in the United States where people of all races have managed to succeed despite starting with very little. But a question on many peoples’ minds is whether or not Black Americans are treated fairly in the United States. Claim: An article on September 15 from the conservative Heritage Foundation claimed that a co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement and a pro-communist China group are partnering up. The claims in this article have gone viral, with more than 15,000 shares on Facebook.
Rating: This claim is FALSE. The article incorrectly equated two nonprofits with the same name and wrongly associated Alicia Garza, co-founder of BLM, with the nonprofit that has ties to the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
