(Tiếng Việt)

What do you do when your friend or family sends an untrustworthy Facebook post? With the rise of problematic information, we invite you to join lunch/dinner & workshops for the Vietnamese community. Come co-create safe spaces where generational differences can join together and practice information sharing at the dinner table and on social media spaces. Together, we will engage in storytelling, intergenerational memory sharing, identify problematic information, and learn how to use interactive tiplines and helplines.

Lunch & dinner provided!

About

These workshops were made by and for the Vietnamese American community to hold an intentional space to share and trust information through storytelling, translations, and critical social media engagement. This is more than a media or information literacy learning session, but a continuous space for cultural and generational differences to join together and practice information sharing towards collective understanding instead of polarization.

This is a part of Sarah Nguyễn’s doctoral dissertation research at the University of Washington’s Information School. Approved by University of Washington’s IRB (#STUDY00017218). All data will be anonymized.

Goals

  • Cultivate connections with intergenerational communication skills
  • Learn how to mitigate mis- and disinformation with a healthy information diet (i.e., information & media literacy skills)
  • Learn the nuances of navigating social media & the internet
  • Learn & share practices towards collective sensemaking, instead of anger and polarization

Please contact VietFactCheck@gmail.com send a message on FB messenger if you have any questions and/or feedback to share.

Fact-Check Tools

These tools are created to combat problematic information, provide verified sources, and information to users who come across untrustworthy news and information.

Offered in both Vietnamese and English, users can submit links, videos, questions, or pictures to be checked, providing quick and informative responses. The Helpline will provide checked information, and the Tipline is made for you to report rumors and misleading content to help us research and provide fact-checked information.

Read: Changing Tides

In each of our workshops, we will read the illustrated book Changing Tides by Celestine Le, Rachel Moran, Anh Nguyen, and Sarah Nguyễn

When a young activist hands Mai Phung a leaflet about saving the local community building from closure, Mai & her young nephew are divided whether the building should be saved. With the circulation of information, Mai must ask whom she can rely on for the truth, rediscovering a truth about herself she’s long forgotten.
