Project 2025 is a comprehensive plan by the Heritage Foundation to fundamentally reshape the federal government and eliminate checks and balances, allowing the President to freely implement far-right policies. Project leaders have called it the “blueprint” for President Donald Trump’s second term.
Claim: Many Democrats believe that the Texas abortion ban, which is one of the strictest abortion bans in the country, also criminalizes miscarriages.
Rating: This claim is MOSTLY TRUE. Though the Texas law also allows for abortion to save the life of the mother, many pharmacies and doctors are hesitant about treating miscarriages, because they are concerned about being charged with a crime. That is because the same drugs used to treat miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies are also used for abortions.
Claim: Democrats have been claiming that Republicans want to pass a law banning abortions nationally, making it illegal to obtain one in the U.S.
Rating: This claim is HALF TRUE. A number of Republican politicians have said that they do not want a total abortion ban but instead, want that decision to be made at the state level. At the same time, notable Republicans (such as former Vice President Mike Pence) have said they support a national abortion ban. Banning abortion nationally is not currently a unanimous position in the Republican party. If that changes, Viet Fact Check will update our rating accordingly.
On June 24, 2022, the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the court case that legalized abortion in America. Roe v. Wade being overturned means that it is up to individual states to pass laws to make abortion legal or to ban abortion. Currently, abortion is banned (or will be banned) in 13 states. In addition, 3 states have laws banning abortion after six weeks of pregnancy and 3 states have laws banning abortion after 15 to 18 weeks of pregnancy. The status of abortion access is uncertain in 10 states. Abortion is legal in 21 states.
Roe v. Wade is a lawsuit that led to an important decision made by the Supreme Court in 1973, which legalized abortion in the United States.
