Claim: Many Vietnamese Americans have claimed that Trump’s anti-immigration beliefs and policies are focused only on illegal immigration and Vietnamese people are safe from these policies.

A review of his actions during his time in office has shown that the Trump administration has pursued policies to limit the number of refugees the U.S. admits and to deport immigrants back to their country of origin, including more than 7,000 Vietnamese immigrants.
Claim: Many Vietnamese Americans say they are voting for Trump because they claim that he is anti-communist.
Rating: This claim is MOSTLY FALSE. While Trump commonly uses anti-socialist rhetoric, our review found that Trump has pushed for several socialist policies during his first term. In addition, his friendships with communist and authoritarian leaders like Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong-un, and Xi Jinping conflict with his anti-socialist messaging.
Claim: Several news outlets reported that Trump has repeatedly made public statements that COVID-19 was going to go away or disappear as the cases and deaths in the US increased.
Rating: This claim is TRUE. We reviewed a handful of news reports and confirmed that Trump told the public more than 30 times that COVID-19 was going away.
Claim: Trump avoided military service during the Vietnam War.
Rating: This claim is TRUE. Trump never served in the Vietnam War or in the military. For over a decade during the Vietnam War, Trump sought and received five deferments, including allegedly lying about a medical condition to avoid the draft during the height of the war in 1968.
Claim: In early September, journalist Bob Woodward disclosed that Trump told him that he intentionally downplayed COVID-19 to the public.
Rating: This claim is TRUE. CNN released recordings of private conversations between Trump and Woodward, in which Trump explicitly said he wanted to downplay the coronavirus.
Claim: Many Vietnamese Americans believe that Trump supported the Vietnam War.
Rating: This claim is FALSE. Trump has repeatedly made statements disapproving or insulting the US’s role in the Vietnam War.
